Low Refresh Rate
E-ink screens have not gained more market share, mainly due to limitations of their own characteristics. One of the biggest limitations is the low refresh rate. Compared to mainstream LCD displays, e-ink screens can display content without constant refreshing, which reduces electricity consumption and radiation, making the reading experience closer to paper reading and less likely to cause visual fatigue.

The Main Differences Between E-ink Screen and LCD Screen
The Principles are Different
E-ink is a display technology based on electrophoresis technology. Charged particles with black and white colors float up and down in a liquid capsule under the action of an electric field to form a picture. After forming the picture, the color particles stop moving, the picture will not disappear even if the power is turned off. Therefore, the screen will not strobe when turning to a certain page. A simple description of the working principle of an LCD screen is to adjust the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules in each fixed independent pixel through voltage to achieve the effect of displaying different colors and images. Since liquid crystal molecules rely on voltage to maintain their state, continuous power supply is required to maintain the display. Therefore, TFT is always in a strobing state, but the frequency is high and cannot be distinguished by the naked eye.

E-ink is a total reflection type, which means the display effect will be different as the ambient light changes. The lighter the external light source, the better the display effect. Therefore, the experience of reading E-ink e-books outdoors on a sunny day is almost the same as reading paper books. Since E-ink relies on ambient light, the ambient light effect is not good at night. Therefore, the industry currently solves the problem of night reading experience by adding light guide plates. The LCD screen has a backlight, so it is basically not affected much by surroundings, except in extreme circumstances (outdoor sunlight in summer). Therefore, when you are outdoors, the brightness of the mobile phone screen needs to be brightened to resist the covering effect of ambient light on the screen display.
Energy Saving Power Consumption
Due to the characteristics of E-ink, there is no need to consume electricity during the reading process. It only consumes very little electricity when turning pages. Therefore, e-book products are generally charged only once every 2 weeks or even about a month. Electronic pricing plate products are generally charged once every 5 years. Because the LCD screen always requires drive signals to maintain the image and a backlight always-on to provide a light source, it accounts for the main power consumption. Currently, smartphones are basically used to charge once a day or multiple times a day.
